The first month of the year may not seem like a worthy reason to change your manicure. But once you see these January nail designs, you’ll understand why we hunted them down. You know, instead of working on any of our New Year’s resolutions.
The beginning of the year is the perfect time to try something new or a twist on an old favorite. Whether you have your sights set on all things glittery, or you’re going down the wintery and moody road of dark blues, there is plenty of inspiration out there.
Just don’t go too far out there. The snow gets pretty deep.
We were snowed in last week, and this manicure is all we have to show for it. We also have the 13 attempts before this final version. We’ll send you over a shared photo album.
2. Sparkle Nails
This nail design shows off our most overused emoji, because everything in our life needs an extra little pizzazz thrown in. Even texts to our DoorDash guy, thanking him for his fifth delivery to us this week.
3. Icy Nails
These nails give us all the snowy vibes without any of the snow shoveling or frostbite. Sounds much more reasonable to us.
4. Abstract Blue Nail Design
Got those post-Christmas/back to reality blues? This January nail design might not help in the long term, but you’ll certainly look cool as you tap your fingers in annoyance at your desk.
These glazed donut, almond shaped nails sporting a holographic stripe look almost good enough to eat. But we know you won’t do that, because one of your New Year’s resolutions is to stop biting your nails! Right?

Winter nail colors in particular are known to be cooler, richer, and more muted than other seasons of the year. The most popular winter nail colors include dark purples, intense blues, luxurious golds, and deep forest greens, according to Rianna Basurto, director of marketing and brand development at Bellacures.
By the beginning of the year, we've run the bold reds and greens of the holiday season dry, and we're looking to embrace the winter season. This bright navy blue that isn't too dark is just the color needed to make a statement in the new year.
Soft pastel shades like baby pink, lavender, or light blue can evoke a sense of sweetness and femininity. These colors are often associated with a gentle and approachable personality. Many guys find pastel nail polish attractive because it gives a feeling of innocence and charm.
“A rich and luxurious dark red that can be worn either as a solid or incorporated into a negative space design” is a great option for your February manicure, Haye says. “Dark red shades give a divine touch of drama to your nails.”
Black nail polish looks good on almost anyone and looks best when you use a glossy top coat. If black feels too stark for you, then you might consider a beautiful midnight blue for winter. This color always reflects the cold weather and is the ideal choice for winter.
Neutral Shades: Opt for neutral colors like nude, beige, rose, or soft pink. These shades create a clean and elegant look, giving the illusion of youthful hands.
Earthy Tones: Natural and earthy nail polish colors are in vogue this year. These muted and understated shades, such as warm browns and soft greens, provide a more relaxed and organic look, perfect for those who prefer a minimalist and nature-inspired style.
Think fiery reds, splashy blues, and even vivid yellows alongside classic springtime hues like lavender and pink. These nail colors take inspiration from Fall/Winter 2024 runway shows, spring fashion trends, and mood-boosting elements of the season.
“If you have a lighter skin tone, the color would differ depending on how fair your skin is, but corals, greens, and red would be good for older hands because it draws attention to the nails,” according to Orly. According to Orly, older adults with darker skin may look best in orange, gold, and gray shades.
"Expensive looking nails have a real chic look about them. Opting for a one colour manicure in either a sheer nude, a rich dark red or even a classic pillar box red screams luxury to me! The key to this look is understated and chic, 'your nails but better'," says manicurist Laura Massey.
In a representative survey, the German Paint Institute found that men generally likeblue , but also likegray , black and brown . Both sexes like green about equally, while women are more likely to like red ,yellow ,beige and orange .
Light blue and periwinkle are bound to dominate everything from eyeshadow to nails this year, so take advantage of the trend and opt for winter blues—but the good kind.
The truth is that there really isn't one single color of toenail polish that goes with all dresses and shoes. With that said, there are a few colors that can work with many different looks. A good go-to is a neutral color like beige, light pink, or light gray.

Glitter nails are synonymous with NYE, but you can make it even more fun with a bold flashy color. Celebrity manicurist and educator Mimi D opts for a sparkling purple polish and goes either full coverage or mesmerizing swirl designs with negative space on each nail.
Whether you're wearing it as a nude or a neutral, brown nail polish is an elegant and classic shade that goes with anything, regardless of the time of year.
